Alias Creation

Add alias structures within the Site Tree to determine where to structurally fit DITA maps and topics within your site navigation. The CMS provides each alias with an ID (da/ID).

Alias Creation Rules and Requirements

When creating alias structures, keep the following in mind:

  • The CMS only creates alias structures for checked-in DITA assets.
  • Users can create aliases for DITA maps or topics. When creating an alias based on a single DITA topic, the CMS only creates an alias for that topic. When creating aliases based on a DITA map, the CMS creates the alias structure based on the hierarchical structure of references within the map.
  • Alias structures can exist under the Site root, pages, components, or folders in the Site Tree.
  • Alias structures can be siblings of, pages, components, folders, or other alias structures.
  • Users can create more than one alias structure instance from the same DITA content. However, multiple (i.e., reused) alias structures generated from the same DITA content cannot reside under the same direct parent in the Site Tree.

For example, let's say a user wants to create two alias structures for the DITA content getting-started.ditamap. The CMS prevents these two alias structures from residing under the same parent page. The CMS requires these alias structures to reside under separate parents.

Note
Users can sync DITA asset changes to their correlating alias structures as needed. See Alias and DITA Content Updates for details.

Alias Creation Tools

Users can choose from the following CMS tools to add alias structures.

DITA Maps Management

Add alias structures for DITA maps via the DITA Map Manager interface of Administration > DITA

See Add Aliases from DITA Map Manager for details.

Utility Trees

Use the utility trees (i.e., the Site Tree or Assets Tree) to create alias structures. Users can create alias structures via the drag and drop or via the utility tree context menus.

Drag Action

Add alias structures by dragging the DITA asset from the Assets Manager main pane or from the Assets Tree to the Site Tree.

The drag action becomes available when users work with utility trees. Use the drag action to add aliases by doing one of the following:

  • Move the DITA asset from the Assets Manager main pane to the Site Tree via the alias drag handle.
  • Use the utility tree pin feature to display the Site Tree and Assets Tree side-by-side, and drag the DITA asset from the Assets Tree to the Site Tree.

See Adding Aliases via Drag/Drop for details.

Context Menus

Use the Site Tree or the Assets Tree context menu to add alias structures in the Site Tree navigation.

See Adding Aliases via Site Tree for details.

See Adding Aliases via Assets Tree for details.

Alias Management Properties

Add, view, and manage alias structures via the Alias Management tab of the asset's DITA Properties.

See DITA Aliases in DITA Properties for details.
