Beyond Traditional SEO

Traditional SEO tools are very good at telling you what a crawler can see.

Our metadata audit goes a step further by helping explain why the crawler sees it — and whether the site is providing enough structure and context for search engines and AI-driven answer systems to understand the content correctly.

That distinction matters.

For example, a crawler may report that a page is missing a meta description. But there are several very different reasons that can happen, for example:

Connecting the CMS to the Published Experience

For each meaningful finding, we look across three parts of the implementation.

The schema

First, we look at how the content model is configured.

Does the field exist? Is it available on the appropriate page types? Does the CMS provide authors with useful instructions or fallback behavior?

We also look at whether the content model captures the kinds of information that can help search and answer systems understand the page more precisely.

The content

Next, we look at the actual values being managed by content authors.

Are important fields being populated? Are they being used consistently? Are there page types where useful content exists but is underutilized?

We also look for opportunities to make content more explicit and answer-ready: clear headings, strong summaries, descriptive relationships, useful supporting details, and content structures that can be interpreted reliably by both people and machines.

The published page

Finally, we look at what the website actually renders.

Does the value from the CMS reach the page? Is it transformed along the way? Does the resulting HTML accurately reflect the author’s intent?

Does the published page contain the metadata, structured data, headings, entity relationships, and other signals that search engines and answer platforms can actually consume?

The gaps between these layers are often where the highest-value findings appear.

A field that is already populated but never rendered is not a content problem. It may be a relatively small development change with an immediate site-wide impact.

Likewise, a value being generated in the template without an authoring control may indicate an opportunity to give content teams more flexibility.

Establishing the Right Baseline

An Ingeniux content tree contains more than public web pages.

It may include folders, components, settings records, virtual links, assets, and other content that should not be evaluated in the same way as a standard page.

Before calculating metadata completeness, we establish the correct population.

This sounds like a small distinction, but it can significantly change the findings. Including content that was never intended to carry SEO or AEO signals can make a healthy implementation look unnecessarily incomplete.

We also distinguish between what is stored in the CMS and what is ultimately rendered.

A page title, for example, may be combined with a site name, section name, or breadcrumb path when published. Because the rendered value is what search engines and other systems receive, both sides of that equation matter.

What We Look For

The audit typically evaluates four major areas.

Template and content-model coverage

We inventory the page and component schemas in use and determine where metadata controls are available, where they are missing, and where older or unused structures may still be adding complexity.

We also look for whether important information is being captured in structured fields or only represented as undifferentiated body copy.

This matters increasingly for AEO because well-structured content gives search engines and AI systems clearer signals about what a page represents and how its information relates to other content.

Metadata quality

We evaluate important metadata such as page titles and descriptions for:

Indexability and technical hygiene

That allows structured data to grow naturally from the site’s existing content model instead of becoming a separate authoring burden.

For SEO, these structures can help search engines interpret content more accurately and may support enhanced search experiences where available.

For AEO, they provide explicit statements about people, organizations, places, events, relationships, and other entities rather than asking an answer engine to infer everything from prose alone.

SEO and AEO Work Best Together

SEO and AEO are closely related, but they are not identical.

SEO traditionally focuses on helping content become discoverable, indexable, relevant, and competitive in search results.

AEO focuses more specifically on helping systems understand content well enough to use it when constructing direct answers, summaries, recommendations, and other generated search experiences.

There is considerable overlap.

Both benefit from:

  • Clear information architecture
  • Strong page titles and descriptions
  • Crawlable, indexable content
  • Descriptive headings
  • Well-organized copy
  • Structured data
  • Entity clarity
  • Authoritative source information

  • Strong topical coverage
  • Consistent terminology

A good implementation therefore should not treat AEO as a completely separate technical project.

In many cases, the same improvements that make a site more understandable to a search engine also make it more usable by answer engines.

Common Opportunities We Find

Every implementation is different, but several patterns appear frequently.

Metadata fields exist but are underused

Many sites already have fields for browser titles, descriptions, social sharing, and related metadata, but authors may not know when to use them or may rely entirely on defaults.

In these cases, the answer is not necessarily to begin filling in thousands of fields manually.

Often, better template fallbacks can provide a strong baseline automatically, while authors retain the ability to override values on important pages.

This creates a more sustainable foundation for both SEO and AEO.

Content exists in the CMS but never reaches the page

This is one of the highest-value issues to find.

If editors are already maintaining useful metadata or structured information and the template simply does not render it, a development change can unlock value across the entire site without requiring new content.

This can include everything from meta descriptions and canonical controls to dates, authors, locations, images, or other information useful for structured data.

Automatically generated metadata has grown too long or too generic

Titles built from page names, section names, breadcrumb trails, and site names can become excessively long.

Description fallbacks can have similar issues.

The same principle applies to AEO: automated content should provide useful context, not simply produce more text or repeated signals.

Structured information is trapped in prose

A page may already contain an event date, staff member, address, service area, question and answer, or other useful fact.

But if that information exists only inside a large text block, systems have to infer its meaning.

Where appropriate, we may recommend representing that information through structured CMS fields and corresponding Schema.org output.

This improves consistency for authors while giving downstream systems clearer information to work with.

Sitemaps contain unnecessary or misleading URLs

A sitemap should give search engines a clean representation of the site’s public content.

We commonly review for issues such as:

  • CMS-generated XML URLs
  • Redirecting HTTP URLs
  • Duplicate or collision-generated paths
  • Uniform priority values that provide no meaningful signal
  • Content that should not be submitted for indexing

A cleaner indexable footprint makes it easier for search systems to concentrate on the content the organization actually wants discovered.

External-link content may deserve a stronger content strategy

Some organizations maintain records that primarily point visitors to an article, news story, recognition, or resource on another website.

Those pages may have limited SEO or AEO value on their own.

For higher-value mentions, it can be more effective to create original content on your own site explaining the feature, recognition, research, or topic and then link to the external source as supporting material.

Instead of publishing a thin record that effectively says, “Read this somewhere else,” the organization creates a useful page of its own.

That can provide:

  • Stronger topical context
  • Additional internal linking opportunities
  • Clearer entity relationships
  • More useful structured data
  • A source answer engines can understand and potentially reference
  • A permanent piece of content the organization controls

The goal is not to rewrite someone else’s article. It is to provide your organization’s own perspective and context around why the external coverage matters.

Delivering Tiered Recommendations

Not every organization needs to implement everything at once.

Structured data can describe strong content.

A template change may improve every page using that template.

A content change usually needs to happen page by page.
