Boosting or Excluding Schema Fields

Administrators can add exclusions or boosts to an individual schema or add them to select fields within that schema. Use boosts to determine how prominently the entire schema or schema-specific fields display when returned in search results. For example, without intervening factors, a schema field that has a boost value of 1.4 will rank higher than another schema field with a boost value of 1.2 in the returned results.

Use exclusions to omit schema-specific fields from the search index. The content in these fields don't display in search results.

These boosts and exclusions apply to elements that match the field name anywhere in pages associated with the specified schema (e.g., at the page root level, in an embedded component, or in a page presentation).

To boost or exclude schema fields:
  1. Navigate to Administration > InSite Search Configuration.
  2. Click the Schemas tab.

InSite Search (ISS) Configuration Schemas Tab

  3. Click the Add Schema Specific Definitions plus (+) button to create a new schema definition in the Schema Boost and Fields area.
A new schema definition entry displays.
  4. Enter a value in Schema. Choose one of the following steps:
    • Select a schema definition from the Schema drop-down list.
    • Enter a custom schema name (e.g., Detail Page) by typing the name in the field.
      Note
Use custom names to reference component schemas that may not be visible in the CMS.
  5. Optional: Enter a relative value in the Schema Boost Value field to change the boost's influence on the schema as a whole.
    Additional Information
The default value for all schemas is 1. This value should be set from 0 to 2.0. We do not recommend higher values because this pushes all documents to the top in returned results. This setting controls the positions of documents in search results. The default value (0.25) allows pages to show up before documents (e.g., MS Word, PDF) in general.

  6. Click Select Targets to apply boosts to all or individual targets. Choose the publishing targets from the Select Target(s) dialog and click Select.
    Note
By default, the schema definition applies to all publishing targets.

    Select Target(s) Dialog

  7. Click the plus (+) icon in the schema definition entry. Choose one of the following menu options:

Add Schema Field Exclusions and Boosts

    • Select Add Field Exclusion. Select the schema-specific field from the Field Name drop-down list to add a field exclusion in the defined schema.

      Add Exclusion

    • Select Add Field Boost. Select the schema-specific field from the Field Name drop-down list, and enter a number in the Boost Value field to change the field boost's influence in the defined schema.
      Additional Information
The boost value ranks search matches within the selected field. For example, assuming this field has no other influences, a boost value of 2.0 will rank a field higher than another field that ranks at 1.5. While we recommend setting the boost value within a range of 1.0-4.0, consider staying within the 1.0-2.0 range, as higher values tend to introduce additional variances in results. Keep in mind that boosting is also dependent on the how often the term occurs in the boosted field.
