Looking Back at 2023 Software Release Highlights: Taxonomy Management

Taxonomy management is a critical part of content management in the CMS. It allows Site Administrations to create, name, organize, and manage categories, which can be assigned to content items for systematic organization. Let's take a look at what changed in the Taxonomy Management System with the release of Ingeniux CMS 10.6.

As we celebrate the start of a new year, we must also take stock of the previous one. And there’s much to look back on when it comes to new features that were introduced to the platform in 2023.

Today we’re going to take a look at what changed in the Taxonomy Management System with the release of Ingeniux CMS 10.6.

Taxonomy is a hierarchical system that categorizes pages, components, and assets. It allows Administrators to create, name, organize, and manage categories, which can be assigned to content items for systematic organization.

Taxonomy management is a critical part of CMS administration. Oftentimes, organizations will designate a single user or small group of users to manage taxonomy categories and their associations to content.

What’s New?

In the latest release of Ingeniux software, a new user-friendly right-click context menu is introduced to the Taxonomy Management System, making content organization and management more efficient.

The new context menu contains the following options:

  • Refresh: rebuilds the taxonomy tree to display the latest version, including changes other users might have made.
  • New Category: opens the New Category dialog for creating a new category as a child of the selected category.
  • Rename: opens the Rename Category dialog for changing the name of the selected category.
  • Paste: moves a cut category, or places a copied category, as a child of the selected category. Includes all descendants of the original category.
  • Paste Without Children: places a copied category as a child of the selected category without including any descendants of the original category.
  • Paste Associations: adds all associated content items to the selected category from a category where Copy Associations was previously selected in the right-click context menu.
  • Cut: prepares to move the selected category and its descendants for when a new category is right-clicked, and Paste is selected. The operation is cancelled if Paste is not selected.
  • Copy: prepares a copy in memory of the selected category to prepare for when a new category is right-clicked and Paste or Paste without Children is selected.
  • Copy Associations: prepares a list in memory of the associated content items from the selected category for when a new category is right-clicked, and Paste Associations is selected.
  • Delete: displays the Delete Category dialog for confirmation of permanent removal of the selected category and its descendants.

You can also take the following actions when multiple items are selected: Refresh, Cut, Copy, Copy Associations, and Delete.

How It’s Used in the CMS

In the CMS and DSS, taxonomy can be used in many ways, such as displaying similar types of content, filtering down lists of content (for example, in search results), and displaying menus for navigation.

How taxonomy is used is dependent on content strategy and user experience requirements and can drastically fluctuate in scope, from limited use cases that affect only a small group of content to content across the entire website, portal, or application.

Impact On Users

The effective use of taxonomy can streamline the delivery of content to your site in a way that is intuitive for users to ingest and can significantly enhance the experience of site visitors when trying to locate content relevant to their needs.

The updates rolled out with CMS 10.6 will make it even easier for users to manage their taxonomy categories and associations. Ultimately, this can lead to improved content categorization, delivery, and discovery.
