Alias Creation
Create alias structures in the Site Tree to incorporate DITA maps and topics into your site content and navigations. The CMS assigns each alias a unique ID (da/ID).
Rules and Requirements
Follow these rules and requirements when creating aliases:
- You must have user group permissions to:
- Manipulate pages, assets, the Site Tree, and the Asset Tree.
- Manage aliases.
- The CMS creates alias structures only for DITA assets' latest checked-in versions and versions marked for publishing targets.
- The CMS creates aliases for DITA maps and topics. For topics, the CMS creates an alias for that single topic only. For maps, the CMS creates an alias structure that mirrors the map's hierarchical reference structure.
- DITA asset types, elements, and attributes affect alias structure creation. For example,
the CMS does not create aliases for map dependencies referenced by elements with the
@processing-role="resource-only"attribute. - Alias structures can only exist under Site Tree pages, components, and folders.
- Alias structures can be siblings of pages, components, folders, or other alias structures.
You can create multiple alias structure instances for the same DITA content. However, multiple alias structures for the same DITA content cannot exist under the same direct parent in the Site Tree.
For example, if you create two alias structures for getting-started.ditamap, the CMS prevents both structures from existing under the same parent page. Each alias structure must exist under separate parents.
- Alias structures update when you check in their corresponding DITA assets. See Alias and DITA Content Updates for details.
CMS 10.6.492: Only aliases marked for publishing targets display in the Site Tree.
CMS 10.6.378+: Alias structures are created based on the DITA map's latest checked-in content version and versions marked to publishing targets.
- CMS 10.6.308–10.6.342: The CMS updates alias structures only based on the latest checked-in version of the DITA map structure. If you mark an older version of the DITA map structure, the alias structure will not account for the map dependencies in that version.
See CMS DITA Versioning Functionality for more details about these changes.
Creation Tools
Use these CMS tools to create alias structures:
DITA Maps Management
Create alias structures for DITA maps using the DITA Map Manager.
See Create Aliases from DITA Map Manager for details.
Utility Trees
Use utility tree actions to create alias structures. Create alias structures using drag-and-drop or the utility tree context menus.
Drag Action
Create alias structures by dragging the DITA asset from the Assets Manager main pane or from the Asset Tree to the Site Tree.
The drag action is available when working with utility trees. Use drag-and-drop to create aliases in these ways:
- Drag the DITA asset from the Assets
Manager main pane to the Site Tree using
the alias drag handle
. - Pin the Site Tree and Asset Tree side-by-side, then drag the DITA asset from the Asset Tree to the Site Tree.
See Create Aliases with Drag Action for details.
Alias Management Properties
Create, view, and manage alias structures via the Alias Management tab of the asset's DITA Properties.
See DITA Aliases in DITA Properties for details.
